Operation Eagle 34th Annual Powwow
Held April 6th, 2013 at the Washington County Fairgrounds building in Dewey, OK.
Billy Mills, Olympic Gold Medalist, joined Operation Eagle for a One Mile Fun Walk in September. Familiies came together to walk, celebrate health, and enjoy the beautiful weather. Mr. Mills spoke to the families of Operation Eagle about the importance of good health and fighting diabetes, as well as talking about his famous 10,000 meter run that resulted in the only gold medal ever won by an American in this Olympic event. Students received t-shirts and autographs, as well as being able to take pictures with Mr. Mills.
The art of making frybread....
Lilly Tyner of the Shawnee, Peoria, and Cherokee tribes, and retired BPS Indian Education Coordinator, taught students the art of making frybread as part of a generous grant our program received from the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Students and parents enjoyed taking part in the process of making bread from start to finish.
The art of storytelling....
Carmen Ketcher (of the Sac and Fox and Delaware tribes) along with Coke Meyer (of the Cherokee tribe and the great niece of Will Rogers) and Lilly Tyner (of the Shawnee, Peoria, and Cherokee tribes), worked with students and parents on the art of Indian storytelling. In native culture, oral tradition is extremely important and is a skill to be practiced in order to do it effectively. The Bartlesville Indian Women's Club is known for having wonderful storytellers and we were thrilled to be able to learn from such special ladies. Students received advice and tips on public speaking, retold stories to the class, and were invited to participate in storytelling at the Indian Summer Festival in September.
